Writing for UNSW Press

UNSW Press welcomes new authors but advises potential authors that our list is very selective. Being published by UNSW Press means developing your book with an experienced team with successful track records in all areas of publishing, editing, design, production and marketing.

A detailed proposal, rather than a complete manuscript, should be submitted in the first instance. The proposal should include:

  • a one- to two-page synopsis/rationale
  • proposed length(number of words)
  • a detailed table of contents
  • details of any illustrations, diagrams or tables (not originals)
  • an assessment of the intended audience for the work
  • details of any similar competing titles, with a summary of their strengths and weaknesses
  • some suggestions for possible reviewers of the manuscript proposal
  • a brief author resume with details of relevnt background, previous publications and contacts for marketing and publicity
  • if available, copies of one sample chapter may be submitted with the proposal
  • a stampled self-addressed envelope for the return of your MS, should this be required.

After an initial assessment, the publisher may ask for the complete manuscript, but UNSW Press does offer publishing contracts for suitable titles before completion of the manuscript. You will find our royalties are competitive and correspond to the nature of the publication.

NOTE: Assessment of manuscripts and proposals can take up to 12 weeks.

Editing

Once a book is contracted, the publisher will discuss the requirements of presentation of the manuscript with the author. The final manuscript is delivered both on disk and in hard copy and must be accompanied by all illustrative material and relevant copyright permission documentation. Upon delivery to UNSW Press of the final manuscript, it is checked for structure and style before being accepted for copy editing. A copy editor is appointed and ongoing liaison with the author occurs throughout the editing process.

Design

Upon receipt of the final edited manuscript and illustrative material, the production team proceeds to design the book. A design is created with reference to the audience, subject matter and elements contained in the book. The author and copy editor then receive page proofs for final checking. The author is now able to proceed with the index. Overall production can take from 4 to 12 months from the handover of the manuscript to finished book, depending on the work's complexity.

Distribution and Representation

Sales promotion of UNSW Press titles to the book trade begins more than four months ahead of publication. We have our own sales representatives covering all Australian states.

We sell to all national book chains, independent bookstores, campus booksellers and library and educational suppliers. We will also include information about your book in a monthly mail-out to bookstores in outlying areas and smaller accounts.

In addition, we develop lists of associations, professionals and academics to contact about new publications and books are included at appropriate conference displays. We send a range of promotional mail-outs to schools, government bodies, NGOs and professional groups.

New South creates direct sale flyers for all UNSW Press authors. Bulk quantities of these are given to authors to use for their own promotional activities.

Information about your book, launches and events is automatically posted on the UNSW Press and New South websites.
