1.0 Publishing Priorities
UNSW Press is acknowledged as one of Australia's leading publishers
in the fields of Australian studies and natural history, but its
list also includes a wide range of titles in other scholarly and
general subject areas. We are developing our list in the following
directions:
- Books of ideas
- on Australian society and politics, cultural and social studies
and the arts, the environment, history and philosophy.
- in the sciences, to interpret current thinking for a wider
readership
- General Reference Works
- in ecology and natural history
- in botany and horticulture
- Textbooks
- for university and TAFE students, including education, accounting, environmental
studies, horticulture, media studies, engineering, applied sciences
and the built environment
- Practical Guides
- for students and the general reader
UNSW Press also publishes selected books on behalf of public
and private organisations. UNSW Press does NOT publish fiction,
poetry or unrevised dissertations.
1.1 Writing for UNSW
Press
UNSW Press values the author-publisher relationship
and welcomes new authors. Being published by UNSW Press means
developing your book with an experienced team that holds successful
track records in all areas of publishing, production and marketing.
A detailed proposal rather than a complete manuscript,
should be submitted in the first instance. The proposal should
include:
- a one to two page synopsis/rationale
- proposed length (number of words)
- a detailed table of contents
- number and type of charts and illustrations (not originals)
- an assessment of the audience of the work
- details of any similar or competing titles, with a summary
of their strengths and weaknesses
- some suggestions for possible reviewers of the manuscript
- a brief author resume with details of relevant background
or previous publications
- if available, copies of two sample chapters may be submitted
with the proposal
- a stamped self-addressed envelope for the return of your MS, should this be required.
After an initial assessment, the publisher may ask for the complete
manuscript, but UNSW Press does offer publishing contracts for
suitable titles before completion of the manuscript. You will
find our royalties are competitive and correspond to the nature
of the publication.
NOTE: Assessment of manuscripts and proposals can take up to
12 weeks.
1.2 Editing
Once a book is contracted, the publisher will discuss
the requirements of presentation of the manuscript with the author.
The final manuscript is delivered both on disk and in hard copy
and must be accompanied by all illustrative material and relevant
copyright permission documentation. Upon delivery to UNSW Press
of the final manuscript, it is checked for structure and style
before being accepted for copy editing. A copy editor is appointed
and ongoing liaison with the author occurs throughout the editing
process.
1.3 Design
Upon receipt of the final edited manuscript and
illustrative material, the production team proceeds to design
the book. A design is created with reference to the audience,
subject matter and elements contained in the book. The author
and copy editor then receive page proofs for final checking. The
author is now able to proceed with the index. Overall production
can take from 4 to 12 months from the handover of the manuscript
to finished book, depending on the work's complexity.
1.4 Marketing
UNIREPS,
University and Reference Publishers' Services, is a specialist
Australian academic and general sales, marketing and distribution
service. The marketing division of UNIREPS works very closely
with contracted authors to identify and reach the appropriate
markets for each book. We have a comprehensive questionnaire that
we ask authors to complete.
A publicity and marketing plan appropriate to the
content and readership of each title is prepared before publication.
The plan considers advertising, flyers, review copies, conference
inserts, inclusion in book industry databases, targeted direct
mail campaigns, events, individual author promotion and academic
subject catalogues. We strive to obtain maximum exposure in all
relevant media - journals, magazines, newspapers, radio and television.
Major new titles are announced to key journalists (electronic
and print) and review editors from our extensive media list. New
titles are also announced to the book trade and library suppliers
in regularly mailed catalogues.
Books suitable as textbooks for tertiary courses
are promoted directly to appropriate teaching staff, with the
supply of complimentary inspection copies where required.
1.5 Sales
UNIREPS employs sales representatives who sell
to a range of markets throughout Australia. Booksellers - independent
and chains - and library suppliers are visited at least once every
two months.
UNSW Press books sell worldwide. Our agent in New
Zealand, Addenda,
handles sales and distribution, and our titles are also warehoused
in the United States, Canada, Singapore, Japan, and the United
Kingdom. All US customers can buy direct from our US distributor,
the University
of Washington Press, Seattle, which provides marketing, sales.
customer service and distribution. In Canada we are represented
by University
of British Columbia Press, Vancouver. Our distributor for
Europe, the Middle East, and Africa is Eurospan in London. Apac,
Singapore distributes UNSW Press titles in South-East Asia, and
in Japan, we rely on United Publishers Services, Tokyo.
1.6 Co-publication
and Translations
For titles with strong international sales potential,
co-publication is normally arranged between UNSW Press and an appropriate
overseas publisher. Recent co-publication partners include Edinburgh
University Press, Princeton University Press, Smithsonian Institute
Press, John Hopkins University Press, Harvard University Press,
Academic Press and Sage Publications. On occasion, UNSW Press
also buys Australian rights to titles from overseas publishers.
Regular contact between UNSW Press and overseas publishers is
augmented by active participation in the annual Frankfurt Book
Fair.
For some books, UNSW Press will arrange translation
into other languages. Languages into which UNSW Press titles have
recently been translated include Korean, Chinese, Russian, German,
Japanese, Swedish, Spanish, and Portuguese.
1.7 Distribution
UNSW Press maintains and distributes from its own
warehouse in the Sydney suburb of Randwick. Our centralised distribution
operation reassures our 20 international and local publishers
we represent that their stock and customers are in safe hands.
Our customer service staff can take orders by mail,
fax, phone, and email. We maintain over 1500 credit accounts and
operate credit card facilities for non-account customers. Orders
are processed on the day of receipt and invoices sent electronically
to the warehouse. They are then picked, packed, and dispatched
within two days.
